story tl;dr
◈ Before she knew she was pregnant, Leah got shot by one of them while running for shelter. Even if her life wasn't in danger, it got people anxious all around her, because no one knew how being in contact with it affected the human body. After a while, nothing in her condition was changing, so it was treated like a normal wound. There's no way of proving it, but she always told her son that she believes it was that incident that made him as he is. His hair never grow darker and his eyes were always weaker.

◈ Dawn doesn't remember much of his first couple of years. He listened a lot to his mother about how catastrophic the Arrival was. The pieces that came back to him was the sound of a loud siren, seeing a whole building collapsing to the ground and some vague visions of the Sentient Ones. He doesn't remember them leaving. For him, it was a flash of chaos then the everyday life.

◈ He didn't know how to react when Marshall told him his father had died. The ex-military had pain in his tired eyes and his mother was sobbing uncontrollably, but he just stare in the void not knowing what to do. At 9 years old, he'd already understood the reality of his world, that the ones who would leave was never garanteed to come back. After that day, he had a little ritual with his mother. When he would leave their safe place, he would hold her with her forehead against his, laugh because of the awkwardness, then tell her how he loved her, so that if he never returned she would be at peace.

◈ Other than the dangers on the road, Dawn loved traveling, learning along the way about food, plants, first aid and of course how to use a weapon. Not everyone had all that knowledge and so it was a little treasure hunt everytime their group would come accross a librairy. This is still his favorite memories. Everyone would pick a book to explain it to the others a week later. It was his only homework.

◈ Maybe it was an emotional growth, maybe it was the shock of everything, but he actually cried after losing Marshall. Maybe he cried his father as he was painfully sobbing for the military man. He didn't want to run anymore, but the two mothers pushed him forward to safety. That's when he had his first tantrum. Why are we doing this ? Why are we losing everyone one by one ? He didn't want to survive and he didn't want to try. Marshall was his paternal figure. He showind him everything. It takes a moment. One bad step. They were running, he saved him and sacrificed himself. 16 years old Dawn was full of anger, but he continued being the last male of the group.

◈ When he was 18, they had found another group of survivors, a little bigger than when they started, but his mom and the chef didn't see eye to eye. So after a long talk, they decided to leave Sacha and Marianne to go on their own. Following that, it was 9 years of uninterrupted mom-son loves. Dawn grown to find his mom badass and strong, both physically and mentally. Even when they fought, his respect for her never lowered.

◈ In the last two-three years of her life, Leah needed more and more support from her son. He didn't care at all. He even felt more like a men by taking important decisions, going alone to scout the environment. They both knew that her health went bad pretty fast and soon they had another hard conversation. Should he really continue with her ? Share the little food they had when she wasn't gonna make it to next year ? But how could he leave her ? It wasn't like they had a good way to end her life quickly. And so they stayed at the same place for a while and she starved herself to death. He felt powerless, but she had made her mind. Leah Davis died in her son's arms at the age of 55 years old leaving him with momeries and knowledge hoping that she showed him enough to live comfortably.
